Archives Rites held for two Sisters of Mercy who served in diocese

The Diocese of Ogdensburg has received word of the deaths of two Sisters of St. Mercy who served the diocesan church in healthcare, education and board work.

Sister Agnes O’Grady, RSM
A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Agnes O’Grady, formerly Sister M. Joel O'Grady, was held May 30 at Marian Woods in Hartsdale, NY. Burial followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY

Sister Agnes was born in New York City April 24, 1927, daughter of Vincent O'Grady and Agnes Byrne O'Grady.  Most of her young life was spent in the Bronx, where she attended St. Catherine of Genoa School and St. Catharine Academy, both staffed at the time by the Sisters of Mercy.

Sister Agnes received a BA in Education and Accounting from Hunter College, NY,  in 1948, and an MBA from Notre Dame University, Notre Dame, Indiana in 1963.  Additional course work was completed at Fordham University,  MIT in  MA, the University of Chicago, IL, and the University of Omaha, NE.

Sister Agnes entered the Sisters of Mercy in Tarrytown, NY,  Feb. 13, 1950, made temporary vows on Aug. 16, 1952 and final vows on Aug. 16, 1955.

She served as a teacher in Tarrytown, at St. Catharine Academy, Mercy College and Rockland Community College, all in the downstate area.

She also taught at St. John's Academy, Plattsburgh, and at St. Pius X High School in Saranac Lake. Former students will remember as a kind, big-hearted person, with a ready smile.  She was an excellent teacher and well respected by fellow educators.

Her varied career included eight years of service on the Executive Teams of the Sisters of Mercy, New York, and membership on various governing boards of institutions such as the Board of Trustees of Mercy College, the Archdiocesan Council of Women Religious in New York.  Sister Agnes was a member of the Synod of the Archdiocese of New York, a special church committee which recommended roles for lay women and men, held in 1987. 

Sister Agnes is survived  by nieces and nephews, members of her religious community, cousins and friends.

Sister Ruth Seguin, RSM
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mercy Sister Ruth Seguin, formerly known as Sr. M. Pierre Seguin, was held May 22 in Marian Woods Chapel with burial following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.

She died at McAuley Hall Nursing Facility, Watchung, NJ, May 18.

Sister Ruth was born on March 8, 1927 in Plattsburgh, the daughter of Arthur Seguin and Bertha Laventure Seguin.  She lived most of her young life in Rouses Point,  attending  St. Patrick's School, Rouses Point and graduating from Rouses Point High School in 1944.

She graduated from Mildred Elley Secretarial School, Albany, NY, in 1945 and then began working for the FBI in Washington, DC.  She received a BS from Fordham University, NY, in 1965 and in 1968 she received an MBA from St. Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH.  She became a fellow of the American College of Hospital Administrators in 1974.

Sister Ruth entered the Sisters of Mercy on Aug. 15, 1947.  She was received into the community on Feb. 29, 1948 and took final vows on Aug. 16, 1953.

She taught business subjects at the Loretta Business School in Plattsburgh.  However, most of her ministry was in various capacities at Mercy Hospital, Watertown, where she was controller, business manager, assistant administrator and administrator.

Sister Ruth was one of the founding members of the Council of Women Religious of the Diocese of Ogdensburg and served as vice president and secretary of the group.  She also completed a history of the formation of the Council for the diocese. 

Sister Ruth served on the Jefferson County Council of Social Agencies and the Community Action Planning Council of Jefferson County.

In her retirement she was a teacher for Literacy Volunteers both in Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh.  She particularly enjoyed meeting and conversing with young people from different countries.

In 2010, Sister Ruth relocated to Marian Woods Residence in Hartsdale.  Just three weeks ago she moved to McAuley Hall in Watchung, NJ. 

Sister Ruth is survived by her brother Raymond and a sister, Betty Main, both of whom live in Florida; nieces,  nephews, and cousins.
