Applications are already coming in for the 2023-2025 Formation for Ministry program. Arthur Ward, a parishioner with St. Philip Neri Church in Westport, will be a new lay ministry candidate when the program starts this September.

Ward said he is eager for this chance to walk closer with Jesus on his spiritual journey, while also stepping up to fill a need for more parishioner participation at St. Philip Neri.

“I hope to grow in understanding and effectiveness; understanding for myself to better navigate God’s path as it is being set before me, and the effectiveness to guide others to discern God’s grace and guidance in their own lives,” he said.

Ward added the program will not only expand on his ministry in the parish, but also professionally.  He is currently an Alcoholism and Substance Counselor working with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. He hopes participating in the Formation for Ministry program will provide the tools he’ll need to one day move into a spiritual advisor role as a chaplain.

“Communicating hope within a prison to incarcerated individuals and fellow employees is how I see my work,” he said. “When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want to be a helping hand.”
