Lifechain events held around the diocese Oct. 4

Sunday, October 4, was the 39th year of the National Lifechain, held on the first Sunday in October, Respect Life Sunday. Since it began, Lifechain has expanded to include Canada. In the Diocese of Ogdensburg, there were six locations that joined in the annual, peaceful, prayerful, public pro-life witness to the sanctity of life: Gouverneur, Massena, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Saranac Lake and Watertown.

The overwhelming response this year was positive. It’s nice to receive a honk or thumbs up, knowing others support life and agree with your message. In Saranac Lake, one person drove by on the sunny, fall day with her windows down and yelled “I love you! I love you all!” as she drove purposely very slowly so others behind her could read the signs.

Bishop Terry R. LaValley stopped by to stand for life with the attendees in Saranac Lake. He thanked everyone for their witness to life. Next year marks the 40th year of LIfechain.

“I’d love to see an international LIfechain across the Ogdensburg-Prescott Bridge” said Colleen Miner, coordinator of the Saranac Lake Lifechain and diocesan Respect Life director. “I’m not sure what would be involved with that, but an international Lifechain would be an amazing pro-life witness!”

Thank you to everyone who stood for life! And special thanks to those who coordinated the local efforts: Brandy Parshley, Father Mark Reilly, Deacon Ken Lushia, Hattie Taylor and Beti Ann Honan.
